How to arrange pillows on a sofa?

Throw pillows are the easiest way to liven up your space and give your sofa a polished look. With endless options and combinations for arranging your pillows, it can be hard to know exactly where to start.

Before you even begin the throw pillow shopping process, it's good to have a plan for how you're going to arrange them. This will help you get the right sizes, the patterns you want, and colors that complement your decor.

1. Observe and Examine the Living Room

It's crucial to start by taking a step back and first considering the main attraction: your sofa.

Most sofas stick to a classic color palette: white, grey, black, or beige. These neutral colors allow for a wide range of pillow combinations. For bold sofas, you can stick to neutral pillows and one statement pillow to tie everything together.

When choosing a color palette for your sofa pillows, you can truly pick any color family that harmonizes with the rest of your living room decor.

2. Choosing Your Pillows

Now let's talk about choosing your pillows. You don't want a random mix of pillows; you want to create a curated collection with a cohesive color palette, a mix of patterns for visual interest, and varied sizes for depth.

Just make sure all the pillows are in the same color, no matter which color you choose. When choosing pillows, start by basing the color palette on a dark shade, then move to lighter shades of the color palette by mixing patterns that pick up similar colors.

We love the idea of using teal, turquoise, or blue as an "active" neutral. While blues add nice pops of color to your space, they are flexible enough to be neutral on the color spectrum while allowing you to mix different shades of blues in the same arrangement.

3. Cushion Size

The size of your sofa determines the ideal number of pillows you should use. As a general rule, an odd number of pillows makes for the most inviting arrangement.

Generally, we suggest three pillows for a small sofa, five for a large one, and seven for grand sofas. In terms of size, a 45x45cm or 50x50cm square pillow usually fits perfectly on large sofas, while a 40x40cm square pillow will be better suited for a smaller sofa.

While you can stick to pillows of the same size, you can also mix them up by adding a variety of sizes. Start with a 55x55cm pillow, then layer a few smaller pillows around it.

4. Creating a Mix

Add some dimension to your sofa by mixing prints and solids. Blend organic and rectilinear graphic prints with solid textures for an eye-catching look.

After choosing your neutral pillows, complete the look with a smaller, unique pillow in a striking texture or pattern. Metallic colors, fur, patterns, and textures are all options you can play with.

By opting for a smaller size for this pillow, you balance the piece while keeping things interesting.

BONUS: Living room decor examples!

Your preferred design style can help you choose how you arrange pillows! And we know it's not always perfect, at least it shouldn't be too personal or too excessive.

So we've put together some different arrangement approaches below that suit various design styles and sofa styles.

A. Traditionalist Style

If you prefer traditional interior design, you’ll definitely want to opt for a symmetrical arrangement. We like to use the matching cushions that came with your sofa as a base for your cushion arrangement.

From there, work from the outside in. Incorporate a mix of traditional patterns and colors, such as the floral and geometric prints above.

When choosing your cushion colors and patterns, consider other furniture and decor in your space, and try to use the same colors.

Above, we’ve used the orange from the accent chairs and brought it into the sofa’s center pillow. And, while the floral patterns are different, the blues in the chair and sofa pillows match the wall color, which helps create a cohesive feel in the space.

These patterns also align with the botanical prints on the wall and the floral pattern in the rug, proving that you can mix floral patterns without the space feeling too ostentatious or eclectic!

B. Minimalist Style

For minimalists, less is always more. And this rule certainly applies to how you arrange pillows on your sofa. In minimalist interior design, there's no need to fill the sofa with cushions!

Instead, keep it simple by choosing only two or three cushions, but we particularly like to choose three so we can create an asymmetrical arrangement.

Above, we chose matching cushions in each corner of the sofa, then added one in a contrasting color. This adds comfort and a touch of color and texture, without overwhelming the space.

While we only opted for solid colors in this space – we wanted the patterns in the artwork above the sofa to speak for themselves – you could certainly choose cushions with a more obvious texture or pattern. We also used wall art to guide the color choices of the cushions in the living room above.

C. Bohemian Style

In a bohemian space, you can afford a more exaggerated and maximalist approach to pillow arrangement. So don't be afraid to mix tons of patterns, colors, and textures! This is also the perfect place to layer tassels!

Once you've chosen your cushion mix, you can simply pile them on your sofa without too much concern for having a perfect and specific placement for each cushion. Just keep in mind the scale of the patterns and the size rules outlined earlier in this article!

With an eclectic decor style like this, it’s also very helpful to have a consistent color scheme or coordinating elements to prevent the look from becoming chaotic.

In fact, in the room above, we opted for matching cushions on each of the accent chairs, and used the same cushion on the sofa to help tie together and ground the eclectic mix of patterns and colors.

D. Sectional Style

Arranging cushions on a sectional sofa can be a particularly daunting task. Not only do you have to consider each end of the sofa, but you also have an extra corner in the middle! But arranging cushions on a sectional sofa is not as difficult as it might seem. In reality, it's all about working with the corners.

We recommend using two or three cushions in each group. Start by anchoring each group with a dark, solid color. Then, add accent patterns and colors. We like to keep the ends more symmetrical and introduce a different splash of color in the central corner!

You can see how we did this in the image above, where we used matching pillows in each corner – the same solid and patterned pillow in each group.

But we added an extra solid-colored pillow on the left for a slightly asymmetrical look, and we added a yellow pattern in the middle, which matches the wall color and the art!

This is a good basic approach, but you can always add more or less depending on your style!
