How to fluff up cushions?
of reading

Sagging, lumpy, full of wrinkles and soft. While these qualities are cute on a bulldog puppy, they are not on your furniture, and even less so on your cushions, which is something we use every day after all.
Over time, your once pristine and lively sofa may begin to show this tell-tale sagging. You could simply sell it - or learn how to fluff cushions to give them a new lease on life.
Fluffy pillows? Pfft. Anyone can do it. While that may be true, it's quite an art to properly fluff contemporary pillows and sofa cushions.
Just like the art of a precise skincare routine, a pillow fluffing regimen can lead to a more durable and younger-looking sofa. To ensure your cushions stay in perfect shape, we asked our in-house experts for their professional advice. Let's get fluffing.

1) The need to fluff pillows
Your sofa and lounge chair cushions work hard. They deserve to be a little pampered from time to time.
The materials used in most fillings, such as down, foam and polyester (also known as "polyfill"), naturally change shape over time.
You may notice that your favorite spot on the couch has a bit of a dip or indentation compared to your preferred Netflix viewing spot.
The back cushion of your armchair may sag where your pet likes to nap. Whatever the case, it's normal to see this kind of shape change with regular use.
This doesn't mean you're destined to live with furniture that looks like it's had too many tired, sleepless nights. By regularly fluffing your pillows and cushions, you'll instantly breathe new life into your furniture. It's perhaps the simplest and most effective way to refresh a room.
Regular maintenance and fluffing can also help extend your sofa's lifespan. By helping the filling to disperse evenly, all areas of the cushions are subjected to the same wear and tear.
Remember: a well-fluffed cushion is a stronger cushion.
Not only will fluffing cushions make your space look better, but you'll feel better. You'll notice a big change in the support your back cushions provide. Your butt and back will thank you when they feel the newly fluffed seat cushions.

2) Different fluffs. Different needs
Different styles of older sofas and modern armchairs have different fluffing needs. It's important to consider how much time you're willing to dedicate to fluffing your cushions before purchasing a piece of furniture.
Due to their extraordinary softness, down and feather blend cushions require more regular fluffing than other types of filling. If you know you won't be able to stick to a good fluffing schedule, it's best to invest in other types of cushions.

3) How to fluff cushions like an expert
It's time to get down to business: the fluffing.
When it comes to down, foam, and polypropylene pillows, the first thing to do is remove all cushions from the sofa or armchair. Place them in a clean area. Once they are removed, take the opportunity to vacuum all those little crevices.
A) Flip them and reverse them
If you have reversible cushions, meaning cushions with the same fabric on the back and front, there's a quick and easy way to freshen things up.
After a quick vacuum of your sofa or armchair, flip and rotate the cushions. We recommend flipping and rotating your cushions about once a week. The goal is to change the seating "hot spots". Every cushion deserves to be in the spotlight for a while.
B) Fluff them up
It's finally time to fluff them up. Start by finding a central point on the side of each cushion. Begin pushing and hitting the sides quickly and with enthusiasm. Once you've done the sides, move on to the rest of the cushion in an upward motion.
Hit and hit hard to ensure that the filling is dispersed and fluffed. Here you can also use a tool to facilitate fluffing. For example, a stocking or long sock filled with tennis balls makes an excellent fluffing partner. We do not condone violence, but pillows have no feelings (lol).
These fluffing methods will give you beautiful cushions and help you release any anger or frustration you may be feeling. Everyone wins.
Continue the free therapy session by taking each cushion, gripping the edges, and shaking it vigorously. Put on your favorite songs and go for it.
A friendly suggestion: you might want to close the curtains for this session. While it's an impressive sight, this aggressive approach is highly recommended by our furniture experts as a sure way to make your cushions and pillows sing again.
C) Bench cleaning
The above techniques work well for removable cushions, but some modern benches and lounge chairs have solid, sewn-in seats.
You can still apply the punching method to these pieces; the look will just be a little different. To begin, simply punch and hit the seat and back of the sofa or armchair. Go from one end of the piece to the other for an even result.
Once you've punched enough, find the center of the seat. With your palm down, smooth the fabric from the center point toward the edges. If you notice any excess fabric, tuck it into the corners and crevices of the frame. You should now be able to bounce a one-euro coin on your seat cushion.

4) Do's and don'ts for fluffing pillows
With all the shaking, punching, and karate chopping, it's easy to get carried away when it comes to how to fluff pillows. To ensure you're doing what's best for your cushions - and yourself - we've summarized our expert tips.
Do's:
Flip and rotate. The first step to keeping your pillows looking their best is to regularly flip and rotate them.
Punch, punch, and punch. Release all your pent-up frustrations - for a good cause. Pillows love a good fight.
Distribute your fluff evenly. Make sure you don't hit one part of the cushion while forgetting the other side. All sides are equal.
Give the same attention to the cushions. Finish your refreshed look by fluffing your cushions. Use karate moves, leave them smooth, or mix it up.
Don'ts:
Open the tightest zippers. It is often said that cushions should be unzipped and opened to "let them breathe." This works for softer cushions, but we do not recommend opening the zippers of sealed cushions, as it can be very difficult to put the filling back in without breaking a zipper or seam.
Use sharp objects. Fluffing should be a victim-free event. Make sure you're not wearing jewelry when fluffing your pillows. Don't leave keys, pocket knives, pens, or other sharp objects near the cushions to be fluffed. It's also advisable not to have long, sharp nails near the pillow fluffing party. It's good for your pillow. It's good for your manicure.
Use the wrong insert. If your pillow insert is too small for the cushion cover, no amount of fluffing will bring it to life. If you buy it separately, make sure your pillow insert is the right size for the cover.
